The Last Prophet

In the fullest blaze of ancient history
Came Muhammad the blameless illiterate
In darkness was Islam without much glory
Alas in Mekah he surfaced to illuminate
To shame he put the wise and the learned
With his way to the truth and all righteousness
His heart the angels had cleansed and made untainted
Devoid of all dirt unsoiled and spotless
The title Al-Amin upon him was conferred
To show that this man was a man of his word

Muhammad was approached at the age of forty
By Jibrail the angel who taught him to read
Unknown to men were Allah’s great bounty
The unlettered messenger had only to yield
When terror seized his limbs the puzzled Al-Amin
Allah All-mighty blessed him with insight
Imprinted in his heart the sacred words of the din
God’s wondrous handiwork he began to recite
Embrace the good discard the bad he appealed
The truth in the holy Quran has thus been revealed
