Common Sense~Anonymous

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

1. when to come in or out of the rain;
2. why the early bird gets the worm;
3. life isn't always fair; and
4. maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for holding his classmate's hand; teens suspended from school for usin gmouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as religions became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust; by his wife, Discretion; by his daughter, Responsibility; and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 step-brothers;

1. I-Know-My-Rights,
2. I-Want-It-Now,
3. Someone-Else-Is-To-Blame and
4. I'm-A-Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. Do you remember him~Common Sense?

Before we parish with those that we kill

Hush, listen…

Such peace and serenity

Chirping of the little sparrows

Whistling of the crickets low

Rippling of the waters flow

Music to our human soul

Man animal and plant united as one

But, look…

No sparrows to chirp and sing

No crickets to amuse and swing

Poor fishes all dead and afloat

Over rivers and seas polluted

Nature once pretty and clean

Now ravaged by man so mean

So, stop!

Fell not the trees but let them live

Let the rivers flow and the seas breathe

Halt destruction preserve and conserve

For all to live clean water’s imperative

Clean up your act please if you will

Before we parish with those that we kill

Elements of a short story

The following elements are normally found in a story:

1. Plot

This refers to the sequence of events in the story. It is a planned and logical series of happenings that has a beginning, middle and an ending. There are five essential parts to the plot; namely the introduction, the rising action, the climax, the falling action and the resolution.

The introduction, which is also known as the exposition, introduces the characters and the setting

The rising action will lay out the series of events that take place in the story. There could be problems and conflicts and the events could get complicated, depending on the writer's intention.

Climax would be the most interesting part of the story. It indicates the turning point of the story. It makes the readers wonder what events would follow the climax.

The falling action shows the effects of the climax. Things begin to get better if the story is meant to have a happy ending. Otherwise, in the case of a tragedy, it may take a turn for the worse or even end in death.

The resolution is the outcome of the story...
